Filming Today!

So... This is happening and now I'm a little nervous. I have most of today to finalise the torches, pray I don't set fire to anything I shouldn't, and get everyone together. There's not as many people as I'd hoped, but that doesn't effect my project all that much, so that's all fine. I've put together a final storyboard, and special effects are in progress. Locations are flexible, and I'm shooting my first scene in about an hour... *__*

Prop Making

After several hours of hacking into tree branches to begin working on my torch handles, I began to wonder who's mistake it was to trust me with a saw. I haven't quite finished, but I'm almost there... And somehow haven't injured myself yet. I'm currently trying to track down some 'methylated acid' and some cotton socks - all the essentials. Once I have the acid, I can begin trialling the creation of coloured flames using, as suggested by my trusty chemistry student, 'boric acid'. This will ~in theory~ create green flames for added visual interest. Whilst there were many colour variations, I figured that green was appropriate given the scene. Connotations of green being 'rebirth', 'renewal', 'safety' and 'ambition' ; well-suited in a rebellion against a world of dystopia, and adding a little extra meaning behind the narrative and prop selection.  Anyway, here's me almost losing my limbs:

(...excuse the face. I don't know.)

- Lifestyle Magazines -

Whilst the filming preparation is underway, I'm also beginning to look more deeply into finding a suitable lifestyle magazine that could host a feature for my upcoming show as promotion. We're tasked with producing a double-page spread feature article for our programme, in edition to a front cover page centred around our production. Currently, I'm struggling a little. Most 'lifestyle' magazines are targeted heavily in accordance to the gender of their individual audiences - women's being centred around beauty and diet tips, with the occasional TV drama being that of your everyday soap, and men's more focused on the idea of working out and 'how to get women'. Honestly, it's particularly more difficult seeing as its this lifestyle category that the specification has restricted us to, and with such an 'out there' concept, its a challenge to find one suitable. With the gender separation, I've had to promote the show given the gender of the lead character, even thought the show itself was never intended to cater to only males. This is a pain because it means that I will potentially lose out on the female audience that I worked to draw in. Still, I think I've found my most likely contender. New York-based 'GQ Magazine' is targeted at a male audience, and has a branch of products in the UK. This magazine is published in both English and Spanish, meaning that this allows me some potential to reach an audience more internationally, outside of only English speaking countries. The front cover usually features a singular male, almost always in some position of fame. The magazine aren't cheap, retailing at £3.99 a shot. However, I've considered the fact that most millennials don't have the tendency to read these magazines anyway. Readership across this generation has fallen significantly, so my theory stands that if the cover is captivating enough and publicises my show as I need it to, the glossy, sophisticated magazine is going to be more worthwhile taking the time to read and buy.

Still To Complete...

So, the Risk Assessment is completed, 'Aims and Intentions' are pretty much there, and camera equipment is booked up for production this weekend. I'm currently left with getting my props underway... Meaning this evening needs to be juggled with art coursework for me to find suitable items to create my Medieval Torches - needless to say, my actors are a ~little~ nervous. Also, whilst I know in my mind how I've gone about editing and cropping the narrative, this still needs to be translated onto paper and into a working shooting schedule. Costumes are simple, and so I've had these arranged to be bought by each cast member individually. I'm still debating whether or not I'll employ any special effects in terms of makeup, but I'm honestly ruling that down to how much time I'm left with before filming - this really isn't a necessity, but it would be good experience for me. People are still being gathered to make up the numbers of the cast list I had in mind, but this isn't set in stone. A larger group of around 5-10 would be ideal in creating a larger impact, but this isn't a deal breaker and I'm more than happy to work with whoever is willing to give up their time. I've also been scouting some royalty free/copy-write free backing music, but since I don't need this during the filming stages of the production, I'll devote more time to this during the editing stages of the show.

Treatment Sheet

Television Production: ‘Renegade 7’
________________________________
Target Audience: ‘Renegade 7’ will be an ITV production, targeted at a demographic of ‘Millennials’ (18-35 years). As a primarily Dystopian Fiction piece, my series will be of particular interest to this audience, given that themes will very much mirror the real dilemmas and controversies that preoccupy the minds of this age band more than any other, prompting a more emotive and introspective response. As a fictional show, it will cater to those seeking an escapist fantasy with underlying concepts that parallel our own society, giving the narrative more depth and a darker twist. In terms of gender appeal, the protagonist is male. Though, in order to by-pass the gender bias here, there is another focal character of the series which embodies the idea of female empowerment. Putting both characters at an even position and introducing mild rivalry will allow both sexes in the audience to have their needs of personal identity and empowerment fulfilled. Issues such as mental health and potential matters will also be raised, since this is another prominent issue of today that I felt necessary to address in my work. Again, given the age band I’m working with, I think that their personal interest and concern with topics such as this will spark further interest and therefore viewership. Working with a storyline that incorporates an ‘underdog’ figure fighting with a hierarchal position, I would guess that in terms of socio-economic groupings my target market would fall into the C1/C2 (lower middle class/skilled working class) bands, given that these will possess enough understanding of the themes within the narrative, and will also be most able to identify on a personal level with the focal characters. That said, I think that the show won’t be particularly confined to this, and whilst the upper classes may struggle to relate to the raw hardships of the ‘everyday person’ – an allegory embodied in the rebelling leader – , I think that themes in society mirrored this way are universally understood.

Form and Style: The series will span many episodes, will a complex narrative that may have the potential to continue over several seasons. The production itself will have a high production, with focus on its cinematic visuals and effects which will attract more interest and allow for these high expenses to continue. A dystopian aesthetic will a large contribution to the product’s unique selling proposition, given that themes expressed within this genre are those found more commonly in the world of cinema and literature more so than daily television. Given that crime drama is popular, but mildly overused, I decided to incorporate some stylised features in my production, developing a ‘Dystopian-Noir’ feel. To broaden the show’s impact, I broke out of the confinement of one creative genre, allowing mine to work with much genre hybridity and therefore appeal to multi-fandom interests and audience personalities. Dystopian Fiction is my primary concept, with Paranoid Fiction, Speculative Fiction, Mystery, Sci-Fi and elements of the Cyberpunk style working in unison to create a more intricate story.

Themes and Features:  A successful fictional dystopia needs a certain type of protagonist. A non-conformist. A rebel. So, that’s precisely what I’ve created. A young man that is devoted to fighting for freedom, whilst at the same time eternally trapped and held prisoner in his own mind, shackled by depression and symptoms of – a perfect paradox. Then, subjecting this character to common themes of dystopia works to induce fear from parallels between this fiction and real-world problems in the audience. Having a relatable character allows the viewers to easily slip into his shoes, facing a world not too dissimilar from our own, but in the form of a worst-case-scenario outcome. A totalitarian hierarchy, loss of control, technological takeover – each fears of today’s millennial generation, and prominent subjects within a dystopian novel. Orwell’s ‘1984’ has served as a large inspiration, and so themes and features of this text may be borrowed as a visual demonstration as to how disturbingly distorted the future may be if we continue at the rate of destruction and injustice as we are at current.

- SHOOTING THIS WEEK -

So... Filming equipment is booked in to collect for Friday this week, enabling me to begin the shooting process over this weekend. Before then, I have a few issues in need of addressing:

  • A shooting schedule needs to be completed ___________________________________________________________________
  • Considering which shots I'll use at which point will be a necessity, but much of this will be down to post-production editing. ___________________________________________________________________
  • I need to finalise my 'Aims and Intentions' Treatment Sheet before I begin producing so that I have a final, clear idea in mind. ____________________________________________________________________
  • I have a feeling that my storyboard narrative needs revising - the three minute time limit is worrying me, and I'm starting to think my original idea needs a little bit of cropping. ____________________________________________________________________
  • Also, since I'm using pyrotechnics, a risk assessment has become even more vital. ____________________________________________________________________
  • I've heard that the lead in my cast may not be available as planned, so I may be in need of some last-minute compromise...  -__-

Print Text Piece

In addition to the filming, we're also tasked with creating a two-page magazine piece to promote our new show. This includes a front cover with visuals from our filming, edited in accordance to the magazine type. I'm beginning to consider what format I'd like to use to create this. A review, analysis or in particular, a Q+A with the 'director' are my ideas so far. This allows me to take to a more approachable stance, using less formal register and more 'chatty' language to engage readers with the content. As a large-scale production in concept, it may be a good idea to step away from the industrial feel to the product, explaining the show and providing context without overwhelming the consumer.

(EDIT: This was an original draft of my narrative. Since then, I've reworked this enormously. The vague premise is still there, but I wouldn't have had time to include all of this detail in the three-minute limit)

~ TASKS FOR THIS WEEK ~

I need to complete a Treatment Sheet, as a proposal of what it is that I plan to create. Then, I plan to set out a shooting schedule, whilst beginning to consider the print media texts in addition to the episode sequence.

Summer Progress...

Over the last six weeks or so, I feel I've made decent progress in driving the project further. After continuing contextual analysis and assessing the practicalities of filming, I've found myself in the position of being considerably closer to the actual filming component of the dystopian drama episode.

Storyboards are finalised after what feels like hundreds of drafts, and the script is basically finished as it is - honestly, I don't want the acting to have that unnatural feel, so I'd rather have the cast to use it as more of a prompt, allowing more natural conversation to flow on camera. Casting is complete, and locations that I'm using don't necessarily need assessing since they're fairly easy to come across being my parent's work office followed by a woodland setting.

Now, I need to figure out my camera script and exactly how I'm going to find my way around the cinematography equipment. The project itself could use a little more contextual analysis, and I'd like to post my main inspiration here to reflect back on. Also, the order of scenes is going to need to be clarified. Which scenes I record first, and elements such as during which hours I'll need to film after considering what natural lighting is needed create my desired aesthetic. In terms of costuming and props, I think that the clothing is easy enough to come by in a collective wardrobe of mine and my casting's pre-existing garments, and props wise, I'm not implementing anything particularly unusual in my piece. I'm not using weaponry style props on screen, so only a computer with 'official' feeling documents and photographs that I'll take time to create and edit will be onscreen. I also want some special effects for a cinematic feel to my filming but, having also chosen to create something of the film medium in my Art and Design Course, I'll be able to utilise lighting for example in both that and my Media Studies programme.

...I'll also get around to uploading images of my storyboard, etc. here soon.
